Amsterdam
Since Amsterdam offers so many things to see and do, it is quite impossible to get bored in this city. The distinctive Amsterdam cityscape is dominated by canal houses, most of them built as residences for wealthy citizens. You will find 42 museums, 141 galleries, 22 paintings by Rembrandt, and 206 paintings by Van Gogh all within walking distance of each other. Amsterdam is a city that has all the advantages of a big city-culture, history, entertainment, good transport- with few of the disadvantages: it is compact, beautiful and has relatively little traffic.

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 19, 2008

1. Amsterdam city tour including canal cruise
12.30 - 19.30 hrs.
A professional English-speaking guide will welcome the guests at the NH Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky for an Amsterdam city tour. During an extensive coach tour we take you through 700 years of history. Amsterdam is truly unique with a relaxed atmosphere and lively streets that make it incomparable to other cities. Amsterdam is a city full of culture, disposing of a variety of large museums such as the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh museum. The tour will go through the historic centre with Dam Square and the Royal Palace, along the canals and the famous ‘Skinny Bridge’ and ends in the museum quarter for a visit to the Van Gogh Museum. The famous Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh painted for only 10 years of his life, the majority of which he spent in Paris and the South of France. During this period he made innumerable drawings and paintings, a large part of which are on show in this museum. In fact, the Van Gogh museum has the largest collection of Van Gogh paintings in the world, but also hosts an impressive collection of painters such as Monet, Renoir, Gauguin, Manet, Toulouse Lautrec and others. After your visit to the Van
Gogh Museum you will visit a diamond factory where you will see how rough stones become sparkling jewels. Amsterdam and diamonds belong together since the 16th century.
A flourishing industry started in 1586. Four centuries of craftsmanship led to Amsterdam becoming the centre of diamond-industry in the world. Many famous diamonds, such as Cullinan (biggest diamond ever found) and the Koh-I-Noor, were polished in Amsterdam. Each year Amsterdam welcomes around one million visitors who are interested in the fascinating craftsmanship of polishing diamonds. We finish our tour of Amsterdam with a canal cruise through its beautiful canals. Holland’s capital has 100 canals and 1000 bridges and while cruising through the old city you will see elegant merchant houses, carillon-topped churches and warehouses dating back to the 17th century.
Price at EUR 64,00 per person including:

• Professional English-speaking guide
• Visit Van Gogh Museum
• Canal cruise
• Visit diamond factory
(price based on a minimum of 20 people)

2. Delft & The Hague: let’s met the Royals!
12.30 - 19.30 hrs.
A professional English-speaking guide will welcome the guests at the NH Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky for a tour to Delft and The Hague.
Delft, where the past relives itself in front of your eyes when you walk along the canals with their impressive merchant’s houses, through small alleys interconnecting canals and tranquil courtyards. The City Hall and the impressive New Church dominate the Market Square. The Holland International guides will take you on a walking tour through this lovely town. You cannot leave Delft without visiting a Royal Delft Blue pottery factory. De Porceleyne Fles was founded in 1653 and is one of the few remaining pottery factories of the more than 30 workshops, which were situated in Delft in the 17th century. In accordance with the traditions every object is still painted with decoration techniques of the 17th century. During the guided tour you can see how skilled painters paint their beautiful products that are shown and sold in the showroom. Transfer to The Hague where we will start the city tour of The Hague. Although not the capital of Holland, The Hague is the seat of the Dutch Government and the Residence
of our Queen and therefore has the air of Holland’s most aristocratic city.
We tour past the Royal Palaces, the Houses of Parliament, the International Court of Justice. And of course you will make a visit to Madurodam. Madurodam is a miniature city where you can see the most famous buildings of the Netherlands and its different architectural styles. It certainly gives you the opportunity to visit all of the Netherlands within a couple of hours. 3. Maeslantkering in the new waterway
12.30 - 18.30/19.00 hrs.

A professional English-speaking guide will bring you to the Maeslantkering by coach. If a water level of 3.00 metres above NAP is anticipated for Rotterdam the Storm Surge Barrier in the New Waterway has to be closed. In these circumstances the Storm Surge Barrier computer - the Command and Support System (Dutch acronym BOS) instructs the Control System (BES) to shut the barrier. The BES implements the BOS’s commands. In the event of a storm tide, the docks are filled with water, so that the hollow gates start to float and can be turned into the New Waterway. Once the Gates meet, the cavities are filled with water and the gates sink to the bottom, thus sealing off the 360 metre-wide opening. After the high water has passed the Gates are pumped out and the structure begins to float again. Once it is certain that the next high water will not be another abnormally high one, the two gates are returned to their docks. When the New Waterway is sealed off it is no longer possible for shipping to pass. The storm-surge barrier will only be closed in extremely bad weather - in probability once every ten years. A test closure will probably be conducted once a year in order to check the equipment. This will be done when there is little shipping. With the rise in sea levels the storm-surge barrier will need to close more frequently in 50 years time, namely once every five years.

Price at EUR 62,00 per person including:

• Professional English-speaking guide
• Lunchbox in the bus
• Visit storm surge barrier
• Information about water management
• Cup of coffee at the Keringhuis
• Sightseeing
• Film
(price based on a minimum of 20 people)
