Prof. Frank Abbas obtained his DDS degree from the
State University of Groningen, The Netherlands in 1979.
He did his specialty training in periodontology at
the University of Amsterdam (now called Academic Centre for Dentistry
Amsterdam-ACTA) including a PhD thesis on Susceptibility to Periodontal
Diseases in 1986.
In 1989 he was appointed as specialist in
periodontology by the Dutch Society for Periodontology. Prof. Abbas was
active in many professional committees including the Faculty Board and the
board of the Dutch Society for Periodontology.
He is founding member of a large specialty clinic
in Amsterdam as periodontist in the multydisciplinary approach of oral
rehabilitation. At the Department of Periodontology of ACTA he acted as
head of the clinic and coordinator of the MSc Programme in Periodontology.
Furthermore he was appointed as examiner on behalf of The Royal College of
Surgeons of Edinburgh.
His research focus is on susceptibility to
periodontal diseases, in particular the relationship oral microbiology and
clinical periodontology and also on regenerative surgical techniques and
mucogingival problems. Furthermore he is involved in research on the
periodontal-general health connection. In 2003 he was appointed as
professor in periodontology at the Center for Dentistry and Oral Hygiene
of the University Medical Center of Groningen (UMCG), University of
Groningen. From 2007 he acts as chairman of the Center for Dentistry and
Oral Hygiene Management Team.
